Out And About? Don't Forget Your Camera!
Photography Can Be Simple. Follow These Great Tips Everyone wants to be a master photographer. But it's not as easy as grabbing a shooting and camera a masterpiece. There's a lot of work photographers put into taking magnificent photos. Below are a few tips and tricks that can give you a leg up on the other amateurs and have you on your way to taking great photos. Try moving in closer to your subject when you're taking pictures. If you take pictures from different distances, you'll be able to get a few different perspectives and some may come out better than others. Try to get where the subject of your photo fills the entire viewfinder of your camera - this will give you a lot more details of the subject rather than just filler details. Try using a tripod to take your photos. This will reduce or completely remove your movement's influence. It's incredibly frustrating to have lined up a perfect shot only to discover that your hands were shaking a bit and completely blurred the photo. This is especially important if you know you don't have extremely steady hands. Proper shooting stance is very important in photography. You want to hold your arms tight to the body, while having a firm grip on the camera using both hands. This will help create clear shots with less shaking. By cradling the camera from below, it will help to prevent you from dropping the camera accidentally. Don't stay inside when the weather is bad. Although it's natural to think a sunny day is the best time to grab the overcast, camera and rainy days provide an opportunity to get shots that would be hard to get at any other time. These weather conditions can give shots that would look neutral or cheery on a sunny day a dark and foreboding tone. Be sure your photo has a solid focal point. Without a good focal point your photographs will end up looking empty, leaving the eye with nowhere to rest. Your viewers will be more appreciative of a photo that has a clear focus, even if you are shooting a landscape or other wide setting. Use a polarizing lens filter on your camera to minimize glare from direct sunlight and to create an even distribution of light. This is essential when shooting in direct sunlight, but also can be beneficial in any lighting situation. Think of polarizing lens filters as sunglasses for your camera. They are inexpensive, easy to attach and have the added benefit of protecting your expensive lenses from scratches. Move in closer to your subject. When you spot something you'd like to take a picture of, snap a shot. Then move in closer and take a better shot. It will help the viewer appreciate and understand your photo if you have your subject fill the frame. When taking the picture, continue to move closer until you are sure your picture will represent the subject. Keep an eye out for all kinds of natural geometry when taking pictures. Pay special attention to any "lines" that your eye can pick up on in the area or on the subject that you will be shooting. Find the "line" and use it to take a good shot. Create narrative with your photographs. They need to be able to express and tell a story to the viewer. This can be entirely dependent on what you decide to shoot, but do your best to express a story behind whatever it is. You need to especially make sure that this happens when you have people as subjects. Remember to stay focused on your subject if you want pictures that are brag-worthy. Proper composure of your picture depends on keeping the camera in complete focus on your subject. Your main subject should be at the center of your picture, unless you want to create a different effect. Don't worry about the background. You may be tempted to take low-res photos in order to save space on your storage media, but low-res photos look really bad when you print them. Only use the lower settings when you are absolutely sure that you will only be displaying the images on a computer screen. Try adding one or two stops when you shoot objects like snow or beaches to make sure that they are receiving the proper amount of exposure. Scenes that are very white or even very black will try to fool your camera's light meter and you will need to make adjustments to compensate. Pictures of people may be more than a simple face shot. The human body contains a lot of breathtaking parts that make great subjects for photographs. Never let yourself miss out on a wonderful picture because you were busy messing with your settings. Also, you don't want a camera with a preset, as this lets your camera choose it's own settings. Know your options, and choose a setting that lets you switch certain elements you wish to control. Do not leave out the backside of your subjects. If you are avoiding capturing these moments, you could be missing out on many great shots. Capture the moment that a daughter and mother are walking away from you holding hands. It is a priceless moment that they will both cherish. When photographing a building or landscape, consider shooting from an angle that incorporates a strong point of interest apart from the "bigger picture." Examples could include a colorful bouquet of flowers next to the building, or a majestic oak tree in the forefront of that distant sunset. If not defined by their proximity to other items, Landscapes are often lost in translation. Photograph your subject in an environment where they belong. You are sure to find that people are far more comfortable being photographed in their comfort zones and would look stiff and uncomfortable if you were to try to force them into a studio setting. Let the kids play and capture the photos when they are actually happy. Make your subject more comfortable by introducing some kind of a prop. Give a lady a flower to play with or a man a football. Give a bride and groom some bubble gum and have them blow bubbles together. You do not really have to include the prop in the frame in some cases but there may be shots that work out well with them. What's the next step you should take? Well, you need to step out into the real world and start snapping shots! If you keep working at it, you'll find that your shots are far better than they were before.
